Week 3 / Second Lecture : Human to machine interaction [Wenyong]

The previous class, we learn about HCI, HCI was about designing efficient and effective systems. And for this week, we still continue the topic about HCI in the class but is more on how to designed interactive systems that make people respond in certain ways. The good interaction between human and computer is that users can understand the system and interact with it but also to affect the user in a way that make user continue to use the machine by changing attitudes and emotions toward the user. To build a relationship between the user and machine to make it more natural and human like through colors, icons, sounds, graphical elements and animations to make interface appealing. Normally, people like unique or stand out design and it is easy to grab our attention.

Expressive Interfaces
Sounds, color, icon, and animations are used to make the ‘look and feel’ of an interface attractive to the user. Such interfaces are usually found in social networking like Facebook or even a messaging app like yahoo messenger. For example, a smiley face emoticon. It, however, shows what type of emotional state.

Another example of such emoticons that normally a would use to express their emotional state:
- happy :)
- sad :(
- and many more!

User Frustration
Badly designed interfaces make people angry and frustrated. There are also other causes for this to happen to users when they use the computer:
– An application that suddenly crashes. For example, errors, computer crashes.
– When error messages pop up that are vague
– A system that requires users to carry out too many steps to perform a task, only to discover a mistake was made earlier and they need to start all over again Isn't it just frustrating?

Anthropomorphism
What is Anthropomorphism ?
As defined in the book of Interaction Studies - beyond human computer interaction by Jennifer Preece, anthropomorphism is well known that people readily attribute human qualities to their pets and their cars, and, conversely, are willing to accept human attributes that have been assigned by others to cartoon characters, robots, toys, and other inanimate objects.

Criticism of Anthropomorphism
  • Deceptive, make people feel anxious, inferior or stupid.
  • People tend not to like screen characters that point out mistakes.
  • Many prefer the more impersonal.
  • Studies have shown that personalised feedback is considered to be less honest + makes users feel less responsible for their actions.

Summary:
- Interactive systems make people respond emotionally.
- Well designed interface: good feeling
